Hi! I'm Cara Michelle Smith—a journalist and comedian from Houston who's living in Chicago.

I write headlines for The Onion and regularly contribute humor and satire to The New Yorker, McSweeney's and Reductress, among others. I also perform standup and storytelling, the latter of which I've done a handful of times with The Moth.

My half-hour comedy pilot, "The Nest," advanced to the Second Round in the Comedy Teleplay Pilot category at the Austin Film Festival in 2021. I've also taught some satire and humor courses; most recently, a sold out advanced satire course at St. Nell’s Humor Writing Residency in Williamsport, PA.

By day, I'm a lead writer at NerdWallet, a personal finance website that's regularly syndicated in the AP, USA Today and Forbes. Before joining NerdWallet, I reported on housing, real estate, finance and economic development for several publications in Houston and Chicago.
